Permissions and Asset Visibility

A member of a Catalog Collection may not be authorized to see every asset published to it. The level of authorization granted and the visibility of assets depends on the authorization mode applied on the object (see Authorized Objects).

  • If a user already has read access to an asset through its project, sharing, or a workspace, the user can see the asset and its available details in the Catalog Collection. Catalog Collection membership does not grant any additional permission.

  • If a user does not already have read access, the READ authorization mode allows them to view the asset in the Catalog Collection, inspect its details, and perform certain authorized actions, similar to a workspace or dashboard-only user (see Authorized Objects). For example, they may preview a dataset or share the asset with another project—or request permission to do so.

  • Datasets support the DISCOVER authorization mode. This mode displays limited dataset metadata without granting access to the dataset content or preview.

  • All assets support None; if a user has no other access, this option leaves the asset hidden from that user. No authorization is granted to the user through the Catalog Collection.

Catalog Collection Contributors and Admins can remove datasets from the collection regardless of their READ or DISCOVER authorization mode.

DISCOVER visibility

With DISCOVER, users can see the dataset name, project, descriptions, tags, Data Steward, Data Quality status, and related Catalog Collections. They cannot access the schema, content, preview, use, export, quick share, watch, or star. Request share remains available when enabled on the source project.

Asset details and actions

When an asset is readable, its right panel displays the details and actions available for its type. The following table summarizes these details and actions; their availability also depends on the user’s permissions and the asset’s configuration.
